Many well meaning former owners have altered their cars, nearly beyond recognition in some cases. Restoring these to their original appearance is often the goal of a new owner and for many, it is not an easy task. Many answers are buried deep within the weighty burgundy covered parts manuals that grace the shelves at the Porsche dealership. Other answers are seemingly lost to obscurity. While changes to the 900 series Porsches are more systematic than those on the earlier 356 models, there are many unacknowledged differences and running changes. In a number of cases Porsche superseded an original item with a superior piece. The result while frustrating to the restorer was meant to better the marque. I have attempted to bring some of these to light and also to illustrate the original part, where possible.

The purpose of this text is to aid those enthusiasts who have taken the restoration challenge, as well as entertain the Porsche trivia buff. While I am certain that there may be some inaccuracies and uncertainties, I have attempted to put together a complete and accurate description of 1964 through 1973 Porsche 911 and 912 cars. I feel that the information will be helpful to the amateur, as well as the expert. I have tried to depict it in a logical, front to back, system by system, presentation of standard production vehicles. Subject matter is limited to body, chassis, exterior trim, luggage compartment and interior.
